Camp Leonardo: Where Science Meets Art
For the last three summers the Gulf of Mexico Alliance has supported Camp Leonardo: Where Science Meets Art. Each July the Mary C. O'Keefe Cultural Center in Ocean Springs offers area students a week long exploration of science and art. Each morning is spent learning about wetlands and the habitats of the Mississippi Gulf Coast with a boat ride at the Pascagoula River Audubon Center, hiking the Gulf Islands National Park, following in the footsteps of nationally renowned artist and naturalist Walter Anderson, and learning how we protect Sandhill Cranes. After lunch the kids incorporate the science and beauty of nature into their art while painting, constructing habitat boxes, designing stencils, doing fish prints, developing wetland models, and carving 3D clay creations.
